
Tiya

Tiya is situated south of Addis Ababa as one of the archeological sites in Ethiopia. More than 40 stone stelae, among which the sculpted stelae covered with motives resembling among others like swords, Ensete (a kind of Banana tree cultivated in Ethiopia the false banana tree) and other symbols the meaning of which are unknown.
Archaeological excavations show that the site contains graves. The tradition of erecting megalithic monuments is very ancient in Ethiopia. It is difficult to determine the identity of the megalith builders given just the megaliths themselves. But these stone marks are burial cemeteries erected around 700- 900 years ago. They are the remains of an ancient Ethiopian culture and the archaeological site is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site among the others.
