The Great Rift Valley

The Great Rift Valley is one of the biggest land forms (largest Geographical feature) on our planet and mainly in the African continent. It is an effect, a crack in the earth’s surface that extends from Syria to Mozambique. Geologically the rift valley is a comparatively new feature of the earth’s surface.
The tectonic drift that created this vast chasm started some (rifting process) 20 million years ago and formed a marvelous string of major Lakes (which can be seen in the many hot springs, dead craters and live calderas, and rich flora and fauna).  During the last ice age along with one of the most inhospitable and lowest places on our earth the Danakil Depression. It starts from the red sea in the African continent and runs down until Mozambique’s Zambezi valley. It (crosses) divides Ethiopia to northwestern and southeastern mastiffs.
The Ethiopian portion of the rift valley runs from Red sea to the north Lake Turkana on the Kenyan border. The rift valley has formed an environment particularly favorable to life, a complex strip of valley, hill, grassland, swamp, woodland, and forest, where a great variety of plant and animal life could flourish and interact. It also boasts (hosts) a chain of fascinating national parks like Abjata- Shalla, Nechsar, Mago and Omo national parks.
