The Awash national park

Awash National Park is located 200 kilometers, east of Addis Ababa with an area of 756 Square kilometers situated in the dry acacia savanna of the rift valley. The park is entirely established on the plain of the Rift Valley. With the exception of 600 meter high Mountain Fentale, the park area is predominantly covered with acacia trees and savannah grassland.
The Awash River, one of the major rivers of the horn of Africa, eventually flows into the wilderness of the Danakil Depression. The Awash River gorge in the south of the park has some spectacular waterfalls near the park headquarters. A special attraction is the beautiful clear pools of the Filwoha hot springs oasis in its groves of palm trees.
The park itself is traversed by a series of well-maintained tracks, which take in the most spectacular of the many scenic places. The most visible large mammals are Beisa Oryx, Sommerings gazelle and salt’s dik-dik. Near the water fall there is a possibility of lesser and greater Kudu, Defassa waterbuck and warthog. The most common primates are ranges of Hamadryas and Anubis baboons.
