Melka Kunture

መልካ ቁንጥሬ
Regarded as one of the most richest and important Stone Age site in Ethiopia Melka Kunture is located along the upper Awash River. Here at Melka kunture human beings have been active for 2 million years early Paleolithic through the Neolithic to the Christian era. The early inhabitants of Melka Kuntire were hunters-gatherers who established camps and worksites near the Awash River. The location was ideal for hunting as animals came to the river to drink. Meat formed a major component of diet. Great quantities of large animal bones, teeth, and tusks have been found along the occasional hominid fossils.
An informative site museum displays a good collection of artifacts, including a particularly interesting collection of prehistoric skull replicas modeled after findings throughout Africa. There is also an open-air excavation site and prehistoric animal buttering site.
